Personal disclosure: I'm bi-sexual poly. I grew up on Heinlein SciFi and so believe in a lot of things that the US constitution is meant to enshrine. Equality, fairness, the right of the individual. But I also believe that mankind grows bigger than the individual and so "society" has a massive role to play. As someone looking to the future I believe that the "leisure society" is an inevitable result, and we should make the transition smoother, rather than throw up barriers.

IF (and that's a big if; "font size=+20") the Republican party was purely about financial conservatism then I might consider them (if/when I become a citizen). However they're more a party of _social_ conservatism; "no change". And over the 15 years I've been observing US politics (I moved here in 2001) this trend has got worse. They are anti- the future I see. They are all about entrenching and holding back the tide of change.

During the industrial revolution it was the workers who were the saboteurs of the future; destroy machines to hold back progress. In the modern information age it is the conservatives who are the saboteurs of the future.

I just can't support the Republican party because they enshrine a past that I'm not happy with and deny the future I think we should push to.
