Damn!! I've been lucky.
As a random idea, I put my b0rken CPU in and powered the machine up. It bagan to boot cleanly! Shit! Powered off before the lack of cooling could melt the chip. So I bought I new cooling system. Feh, it says for P4, but I guess it's not for socket 478 P4s. However, the fan itself is the same size as my existing cooling system and I have spare Artic Silver so...
Damn! With two broken pins and a kludged together cooling system the machine is working! It's successfully played a game that caused
hangs last month and successfully run the programs which started this whole mess.
Instead of $200 it cost me $20 for a new fan.
I guess the two b0rken ground pins aren't hurting. FINGERS CROSSED!!!!
