I got a call from "my credit card company" (note the quotes) yesterday. They gave the last 4 digits of the card number and wanted to confirm my address. They claimed I'd been a good long term customer and so were going to reward me with lots of money off vouchers for stuff. OK. They then tried to sell me a scheme which costs $20/month and you get special discounts from vendors. Err, no, I don't want that. When I refused the phone got cut off. Huh. The same number called while I was on the train, but when I answered no one was there. They called again this morning and I got the same sales pitch.... including the hangup when I said "no".

Googling the number (727 541 0001) throws up a lot of hits, including http://blogcritics.org/archives/2005/08/26/153054.php and http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=170052 which makes me believe this is a long term wide spread scam.

I reported it to my credit card company. Hopefully I won't get charged for anything.

The wonderful thing about cellphones (which they'd been calling) is that I can store that number and program the phone to "silent ring" when it calls me. OK, it'll drop to my voicemail and'll cost me an incoming call charge (a rant for another day), but they won't interrupt me again!
