At the PATH stop at Pavonia/Newport I was distracted from reading my book by a woman calling out; I glanced up and it looks like she was calling to her daughter, who was on the train, telling her to get off. The doors went beep-beep-beep and began to close, with the womain on the platform and the daughter on the train.

Seeing this the woman dashed forward and managed to get her hand in the door, preventing it from closing properly.

The train began to move and started to pick up speed. With the woman's hand trapped in the door, forcing her to run.

She finally got her hand back, and cried out as her daughter was taken away from her.

Only at this point did I (and others) recover our wits to start moving. I considered pulling the alarm signal, but decided not to. Others too charge of the kid, and took her off at the next stop, to wait for her mother to come on the next train.

OK, so kids and parents getting seperated on the subway or the PATH... it happens. BUT... the train moving while a door wasn't fully closed and with someone having their hand trapped in it? OK, maybe it wasn't far enough open to trip the safety brakes. But why the hell didn't the train guard see this? I thought the whole point of the guard was to look at and verify that it was safe for the train to continue moving. Thankfully it was only a hand which was easily removed!

How fucked up was that?
