House annoyances
Jul. 11th, 2005 03:35 pmThis house is beginning to annoy me,and I'm beginning to wish I hadn't spent so much money on it. *sigh*
Latest annoyance: electical wiring appears to be the original wiring from when the house was built in 1937. This means the cabling has cloth insulation, and not even rubber - let alone PVC! Now, I'm changing the lights from "old people" to something a bit more modern. Which means I move the wires... which causes the insulation to fall off in tones. I'm using up tonnes of insulating tape, and I'm never sure I've managed to get it all insulated properly, so when I comes to turning the power back on I'm worried that things will go BANG or that the light fixture will become live, giving me a nice shock next time I touch it.
So far it seems I've kludged things OK, but I'm very much not happy with it.
So I'll probably need to get the whole house rewired. This will costs many many $$$ and will probably destroy half of the work that I just had done in decorating the place... more $$$... Given it's a wood-frame house, I wonder if they can run new wires without breaking stuff...
