swehSpeakers: I had some spare wooden shelves (from the DVD rack) and so drilled some holes and counter-sunk a larger hole and screwed that to the speaker stand. Not anywhere near enough MDF between the screw head and the stand (I didn't have any screws of the right size, so used the short ones that came with it) so it won't take too much tipping to snap it (so I should remove them before the party!), but in the mean time it's a lot more stable and the speakers sit on them nicely. Wrong colour wood veneer, but it's better than nothing.
Drier: Managed to hook the vent up last night in under three minutes. I just twisted it slightly and it slotted on first time! WTF? So I got to use it for the first time yesterday and nothing caught fire. I wonder if I can run the drier and washer at the same time...
Downloaded some utilities from Maxtor today; will try them later to see if I can get the disks to be recognised. For some reason the geometry always shows up as zero, so the BIOS either refuses to believe the drive exists (4 machines, from a PIII-500 to a P4-2600) or throws an error (1 machine; AMD 2500) requiring F1 to boot from CD. Linux on one of the machines read the IDE bus and said it was a "Maxtor SABRE" but said size was zero. Bluh. Maybe the Maxtor CDs will fix things!
