Star Trek geeking
Dec. 22nd, 2005 04:37 pmAn episode from the original series ("Mirror, Mirror") introduced the concept of a mirror universe, which was a lot harder and tougher and violent. The same sort of people existed in both universes, but mirror-Kirk would happily torture people for information (or just for pleasure), destroy cities to terrorise governments, kill for personal gain... Not a nice person, really. The mirror universe didn't show up in TNG (as far as I can recall), but showed up many times in DS9 and also had a couple of episodes in Enterprise (where they connected it back to the Tholian Web episode of the original series).
It struck me a few weeks ago... we are the mirror universe inhabitants. We're not the good guys, we're the evil twins! How else can you explain all that is happening around here? Torture of suspects, suspension of personal rights and liberties, detention without trial, invasion of privacy, attacking other countries... this will lead to the militaristic universe we saw in the Enterprise episodes "In a Mirror, Darkly" (parts 1 and 2).
We're not a nice people, are we?
