The American Dream
Jul. 7th, 2006 10:55 pmOn a local community web forum people were discussing NJs recent budget difficulties, which resulted in the casinos being closed because the government was forced to close down.

Discussion turned to the casinos and lotteries and someone commented that "The casinos and lotteries are all part of the great American Dream for millions of people through out the country".
I was shocked. I always thought the American Dream was about people improving themselves and their situation through hard work and determination; America was the land of opportunity where anyone could be a success through their own efforts, unlike the "Old World". It wasn't the chance to get rich on a 13 million to 1 shot!
If the American Dream now consists of winning at gambling or a lottery then it's been perverted from a Dream to a Fantasy.
