Staggering towards diagnosis
Mar. 3rd, 2007 11:16 pmI've been running Motherboard Monitor on the crashing PC today. The CPU hasn't gone above 33C (which is well within "cool!" for a P4 2.66) despite a fair amount of file activity (file copying, comparison, DVD burning, network activity) so I don't think it's a cooling issue.
Then I noticed the front panel compact-flash reader wasn't working. A search through the device manager and it's not even showing up. Ah hah... I've had problem with USB on this machine before now and XP really seems to have problems with devices appearing and disappearing too quickly. I wonder if this is causing my problems. Hmm! Oddly the USB port on the same panel is working just fine (I plugged in a flash-mp3 player and it was detected just fine). I'll have to take the machine apart to see if it's two seperate cables or if it's a problem inside the panel.
I hate hardware! I hate Windows!
